The Baltic in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania greets its visitors, whatever the time of year, with fascinating displays of nature. In the summer, the sun sinks into the sea like a red-hot ball of fire, and in the autumn, the thundering of the Baltic cannot fail to make an impression. Excursions to see the natural environment are many and varied: sandy beaches and cliffs, islands and bays are all to be found along the coast of north-west Mecklenburg.

Off to the beach! Fine sand, clear water and brilliant sunshine make for unlimited family fun in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. High spirits on the beach are guaranteed when you’re building sandcastles, rampaging around or playing ball games. Even when the weather is not so good, don your wellies and a raincoat to go hunting for amber, mussels or adder stones.

Mecklenburg-West Pomerania is the perfect destination for a camping holiday. Many sites also offer a great programme of activities so that the whole family is well taken care of. Our special tips are to take a walk along the water’s edge just after you get up, followed by a dip in the sea so that you’re fully awake, and then set off on a tour of discovery in the surrounding area. Visit historic manor houses and castles, take a stroll around charming Wismar or simply take in the gleaming white coastal resorts with their typical seaside architecture.

The beautiful surroundings invite active recreation, for example, hiking, cycling and horse-riding. A visit to the butterfly park in Klütz can easily be combined with a day at the seaside and is always an interesting experience.

Children will have plenty of space to rampage around in the 3,000 square metres of the Mumpitz indoor play park near to Wismar.

Particularly impressive is Schloss Bothmer, the largest Baroque castle in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, situated on the Klützer Winkel peninsula between Wismar and Lübeck.

Camping in the Wohlenberger Wiek

The Wohlenberger Wiek is a bay in the western part of the larger Wismar Bay. It has a shallow water zone approximately 300 metres wide and, to the south, a flat coastline with fine sand and dunes. The 3.5 km of natural sandy beach is ideal for surfing, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding or birdwatching.

The shallow water, sloping gently down into the Baltic, is ideal both for children and for windsurfers and kite surfers.

The campsites are very close to the sea, and here you can camp but also hire chalets or camping pods.

Baltic coast of north-west Mecklenburg

People have been holidaying on the Baltic coast of north-west Mecklenburg since 1793 when the dukes of Mecklenburg founded the first German seaside resort in Heiligendamm. Discover this wonderful holiday region between the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock. Here, romantic fishing villages full of charm, fashionable seaside resorts and old farming or fishing villages, where the red-brick churches have wooden towers, alternate with towns and cities dating back to the Middle Ages. An interplay of fine sandy beaches, strange rocky bluffs and stony beaches, combined with the unmistakeable seaside architecture between Boltenhagen and Graal-Müritz. In the enchanting interior, the peace of wide-open spaces invites you to discover romantic castles and manor houses, the serenity of parks and gardens or even some of the many burial mounds in the area. In some of the historic towns and cities you come upon impressive squares, designated by UNESCO as world heritage sites.
