One of the main reasons for visiting the Lüneburg Heath’s unique landscape is the peaceful, traffic-free nature conservation area with the largest area of continuous heathland in central Europe. But for those seeking a little more action, this area has probably the greatest concentration of theme parks in the whole of the country! These include Ralf Schumacher’s cutting-edge karting complex in Bispingen – one of its kind in Germany.
Those who like a quiet life can visit this unique landscape with the largest area of continuous heathland in central Europe, sparse pine forests, hiking trails and an impressive display of colour when the heather is in bloom. Moorland sheep roam the heath and help to conserve the land – aside from being a culinary advertisement for the area! Hiking the Lüneburg Heath means walking over flat ground in a unique, wide-open landscape, and in 2014, Wandermagazin selected the second stage of the Heidschnuckenweg trail as Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail. You will hear the light-coloured heathland sand crunching beneath your feet as you walk between Buchholz and Handeloh, while villages of half-timbered cottages line the route, like something out of a picture book. In addition to the Heidschnuckenweg, you can choose from nine other longer trails and fifty day excursions.
The Lüneburg Heath probably has the greatest concentration of theme parks in the country, including Center Parcs, the snow dome at the Berg & Tal Adventure Resort, the Hodenhagen Serengeti safari park and the Heide Park Resort. Whether you’re interested in films or in otters, whether you’re staying at Center Parcs or the Südseecamp campsite, you and your children can immerse yourselves in the excitement of a whole different world!
